| Photorejuvenation with IPL |
Photorejuvenation uses intense pulsed light to clear sun damage and abnormal pigment changes from the face. Photorejuvenation therapy can remove “years” from the appearance of the skin by clearing damage and stimulating collagen production. IPL photorejuvenation is the safe, effective, and affordable alternative to ablative laser skin resurfacing.
Patient Information on Photorejuvenation
What is Photorejuvenation? Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive procedure that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to rejuvenate facial skin. This process can significantly improve damaged skin such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, brown spots, red or blotchy skin tones, and large pores. This simple procedure can improve skin texture and tone and help produce a refreshed and youthful appearance. Photorejuvenation can complement other procedures such as Botox® injections, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.
Important considerations. Patients must realize that, as with lasers, IPL is a medical treatment that must be performed in accordance with proper procedure to avoid serious complications. It is very important that the patient give a complete and full medical history. Pregnant patients cannot be treated with IPL due to legal considerations. Certain other patients need to be carefully evaluated before treatment to decide if treatment is advisable. These patients include those that: ·use medications that make them sensitive to light ·have had sun exposure or used a tanning bed in the target area within the last four weeks ·have diabetes with any type of complications ·have a history of keloid scarring ·are on anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as Coumadin ·have a history of a bleeding disorder
How is it performed? Your face will be thoroughly cleaned. A small test area will then be treated and observed for five minutes to see how your skin reacts. If the test is successful the face is covered in a clear gel and a hand-held crystal delivers a rapid burst of light to the treatment area. You may feel a mild discomfort similar to the snapping of a rubber band. On extra sensitive areas a topical anesthetic can be used. Most treatments take about 30 minutes.
How long will it last? Response to treatment varies with each patient. Best results are obtained when patients strictly comply with the treatment plan. Improvements become more visible with each additional treatment. After the initial series of treatments a patient may expect to get a single booster treatment once every six to twelve months.
How many treatments? Five treatments are recommended three weeks apart to obtain optimal results. Do not be discouraged if you do not get noticeable results after the first treatment. With each treatment we learn more about how your skin responses to and tolerates the light. We will adjust the intensity with each treatment to get optimal results. Botox may be used simultaneously with Photorejuvenation for maximum effect. Microdermabrasion can be done one week after a treatment for exfoliation.
