BOTOX®
injections reduce or eliminate facial wrinkles giving patients a relaxed and younger appearance. Wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines (between the eyes), and crow’s feet are commonly treated.
BOTOX®
treatments are popular among male and female patients. Treatments are safe and last three to four months. Our
BOTOX®
prices are the lowest in the area.
Patient Information on
BOTOX® Cosmetic for Wrinkle Reduction
The cosmetic use of
BOTOX®
for wrinkle reduction was discovered by two Canadian physicians in 1987, Dr. Jean Carruthers, an ophthalmologist, and her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, a dermatologist. Together they pioneered the use of
BOTOX®
for the treatment of facial wrinkles and frown lines. BOTOX®
treatments are now performed on millions of Americans every year.
Frowns. We are all born with the ability to frown by tensing the muscles in the mid forehead between the eyebrows. This makes us look sad or angry. Unfortunately, many people tense the same muscles when they are thinking, concentrating, or even when they are just relaxing. This makes them appear sad or angry when they are not, but others do not realize the difference.
Wrinkles. When we blink, squint, or frown muscles tense on the face and pull skin together to form a crease. When we are young the creases disappear when we relax the muscles. As the years go by the muscles tend to stay tense and cause chronic creases in the skin that we refer to as wrinkles. The lines at the sides of the eyes are called “crow’s feet,” those between the eyebrows are “frown lines,” and those on the forehead are “forehead wrinkles.”
What is
BOTOX®?
BOTOX®
is a purified form of one of the toxins produced by the Botulinum bacteria, which can be highly toxic in large doses. The miniscule doses used in wrinkle treatment; however, are hundreds of times less than the toxic dose. After millions of treatments over the last fifteen years there have been no credible cases of systemic illness reported as a result of
BOTOX®
injections.
How does it work? BOTOX®
causes a temporary paralysis of the muscles into which it is injected. This makes the muscles relax. Without tension on the skin existing wrinkles fade and new ones are prevented. Relaxing the forehead muscles can also sometimes make the eyebrow elevate giving the eyes a more open and refreshed appearance.
How is the treatment performed? If you have sensitive skin we can use a topical anesthetic on the skin to deaden the feeling of the injections. The injections usually consist of 3-5 for the frown lines between the eyebrows, 4-8 for the forehead, and 2-3 on each side for the crow’s feet. A patient may get a single area injected or all areas at the same time. Treatment only takes a few minutes.
How long does it last? Treatments take effect over several days to a week and usually last 3-4 months. At that time you may have a retreatment. The duration of effect may lengthen with additional treatments. The Drs. Carruthers have some patients that have had continuous treatment for almost fifteen years with no adverse effects.
Fine wrinkles and sun damaged skin.
BOTOX®
can eliminate large wrinkles but the very fine wrinkles caused by aging and sun damage are not affected. For fine wrinkles and sun damage Photorejuvenation by Intense Pulse Light™ can be used in conjunction with
BOTOX®. The combination of these two therapies is recommended for complete treatment of facial aging.
